Trip to the dog races

Yesterday I went with my new friends to see some Greyhound races in Dubuque, Iowa. We were curious what it'd be like as we are all greyhound owners (ours are retired racers).

Dubuque is an hour and a half away, a gorgeous drive through Wisconsin's "Driftless" area, where the glaciers didn't come through and plow down the hills like they did in other areas of the Midwest. So there are rollling hills and steep valleys, dotted with farms and forests.

The casino is right off the highway and easy to find. The greyhound race area is technically not part of the casino, so you can be under 21 to enter that area. Indeed, we saw kids and teenagers watching the races. It's nice that there is no fee to enter, and you don't have to bet. The only thing we spent money on was food. There was a crowded upper observation area, and we went down some stairs to the outside part. It was almost hot yesterday, 76 degrees F (24 C). The benches were shaded by the casino building and the track was in bright sunlight.

The dogs were beautiful and lively. We watched about 4 races, each 10-15 minutes apart. We didn't place any bets but picked out the ones we thought might win based on how they acted and looked. Teenagers (presumably summer workers) brought the dogs out and lined them up to be looked at before leading them to the starting blocks.

I took some pictures: https://www.flickr.com/photos/sasha_feather/tags/dubuque/

We drove around town a little bit and had some ice cream before heading home.

My friends asked me, can you imagine your out here dog doing this?
I think Abbie would have hated it. She's so anxious and scared in environments that are loud and chaotic; her preferred environment is quiet and calm. She doesn't seem to have a competitive spirit.
My last dog, Sorcha, was a winner though, and I imagined she enjoyed it at least somewhat.

Racing is controversial and people often ask me what I think of it. I still don't know what I think of it! It was cool seeing the dogs run. I think that when gambling and money enter into it, they tend to corrupt. I don't think racing is inherently bad, but making it into a big business means the animals' welfare isn't put first.

I'm thinking about Mews today. How could it have been a year already? I'll always love her.

I'm taking Pippin to meet her new vet tomorrow, and to get her weighed. Hopefully all the squirrel- and mouse-chasing is keeping her in good shape.

Shiremom had her eye surgeon appointment, and she definitely needs cataracts surgery. We haven't scheduled the surgery date yet, but plan to do so very soon. Her quality of life will be so much improved once she can see clearly again!

I need to stop buying Halloween candy so far in advance. I forgot how fond Shiremom is of mini Tootsie Rolls and Kit Kats.

Note to Self: Put "mini Tootsie Rolls and Kit Kats" back on the shopping list.

2) Just have enough time for a nice hot shower before I leave for them.

3) Did I mention London?... Maybe I should've drank tea instead of coffee this morning (but the coffee is such a godsent drink ^_~)

‘Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe;
All mimsy were the borogoves,
And the mome raths outgrabe.

“Beware the Jabberwock, my son
The jaws that bite, the claws that catch!
Beware the Jubjub bird, and shun
The frumious Bandersnatch!”

He took his vorpal sword in hand;
Long time the manxome foe he sought—
So rested he by the Tumtum tree,
And stood awhile in thought.

And, as in uffish thought he stood,
The Jabberwock, with eyes of flame,
Came whiffling through the tulgey wood,
And burbled as it came!

One, two! One, two! And through and through
The vorpal blade went snicker-snack!
He left it dead, and with its head
He went galumphing back.

“And hast thou slain the Jabberwock?
Come to my arms, my beamish boy!
O frabjous day! Callooh! Callay!”
He chortled in his joy.

‘Twas brillig, and the slithy toves

A beautifully drawn, honest coming-of-age memoir centered on the world of competitive skating. The drawings are fascinating and understatedly emotional. I read this fairly long graphic memoir in one sitting. Walden's social anxiety and coming out story are intensely relatable.

This author-artist is just 21, and I eagerly look forward to her future work.

1) Still trying to get organised. Made some To-Do-Lists and there are things disappearing on it, so that is a really good thing. There's still lots on it as well, but I'm slowly getting through it... ^^

2) A little bit nervous for this evening. Boyfriend and I are going to look at a house a second time and my mum is joining us as well as someone who knows more about houses and renovation... *crosses fingers*

3) Phone call with [personal profile] lhune this evening! :D This time for real :-)

chrome zoom issue

can anyone help me with a chrome browser issue? i followed online instructions regarding zoom but it is not applying my instructions. I also restarted the computer, and no dice.

I have Chrome zoom set to 125%, but when i load twitter and tweetdeck, it reverts to about 55% zoom. I have to adjust it with every page re-load. This doesn't seem to happen on random other websites, but I can't find anything within twitter that adjusts zoom.

ETA: went to tool bar, View --> actual size. This fixes the problem temporarily but does not save? I just had to do it again. This is just super annoying and frustrating!

This is the predicted weather today in the neighborhood I lived in before my move:

96°, 17% humidity

Yup, that's the searingly hot October I remember. Those poor firemen in California! They're such heroes.

I'll be running tons of errands today. It's always so satisfying to get them done. :)
